Some useful information about different time slots and their effects
*Gulika Kaal :
Please note, it is believed that any activity carried out during Gulika (Flowering Time) period will be repeated once again. So it's an auspicious time for starting activities like building a house, buying assets or vehicles. Marriage should not be conducted during this period for obvious reasons. And no dead body should not be taken out of the house to the cremation ground during Gulika.
Rahu Kaal :
Rahu Kaal is considered very inauspicious period of the day. As the name suggests, everyday there is one small period of approx. one and a half hour that is said to be ruled by Rahu and hence considered bad for any important work or new initiative. According to some belief, work started in Rahu Kaal period doesn't give good results and indicates only failure. It is considered very auspicious to perform Durga Pooja during Rahu Kaal.
Yama Ghant :
Yama Ghant or Yamagandam means death time. Only death ceremonies are performed during this slot. Any activity commenced during this time invites the ‘death’ of the work or energies relating to that work. So activities during this time leads to a failure or destruction of the end-result. Avoid commencing important, money-related or travel activities, during this time. Leave your current location or have your meeting, or start your activity earlier than or after the Yama Ghant time.
Durmuhurtam means a bad Muhurta. There can be more than one occurrence of Durmuhurtam during a day and these times should be avoided for any good ceremonies.
Varjyam or Vishaghatika time, and there could be more than one Varjyam line during a day. This is not considered a good time slot and please avoid in all Muhurtas. Please do not perform Annaprashan Sanskara in this time as this is Visha-ghatika time.
Abhijit Muhurta is Sri Hari Vishnu's time. When you don't have any Muhurta you can use this time if it is not overlapped by Rahu Kaal or Durmuhurtam, or Varjyam. On Wednesday Abhijit Muhurtham is bad as it's the same time as Durmuhurtam, hence on Wednesday there is no mention of Abhijit Muhurta time. For other days please check Rahu Kaal as well.
Amrit Kaal :
This is a good time. There could be more than one Amrit Kaal line. This time is good for Annaprashan Sanskar as well as other rituals.
Shoolam is a guiding principle which advises people to avoid traveling in a particular direction on a particular day of the week. Every day of the week has a shoolam direction and traveling in that direction is considered inauspicious and is sure to bring bad luck, loss of assets etc. Direction in which Lord Shiva's trident (Trishul) lies when placed on the ground decides the shoola direction. However, if a travel in the said direction is inevitable, there are certain remedial measures which may mitigate the ill effects to a certain extent. Please note, Shoolam is not to be considered for your routine travel, but for very important purposes like marriage, job interview, business meetings, long journeys etc.
